The herbaceous and island borders come into their own in midsummer and give a dazzling display lasting till the autumn frosts.

At 100m long, the formal herbaceous border is an impressive sight and contains many unusual cultivars and species. The huge range of herbaceous plants and bulbs are laid out in bold groups, and are a magnet for pollinating insects.

There are also herbaceous plantings in the Island Beds to the south west of the glasshouses which are well worth visiting.
