St Andrews Open Learning Successful Vegetable Growing Course

Date: 18 April 2024 (19:00-21:00)

St Andrews Open Learning will be hosting their course "Successful Vegetable Growing" at the Garden again this spring!

Growing your own food can be addictive! It tastes so good that you never want to give it up. With current economic conditions and increasing concern about “food miles” and vegetable shortages, more people are turning to growing their own vegetables. This short practical course will focus on the delicious vegetables which can be grown successfully in Fife, whether you have plenty of garden space, or simply some flower pots.

We shall consider how to improve soil fertility, and vegetable growing in general. A range of different vegetables will be focussed on in 2024: potatoes, onions, salad vegetables, purple sprouting broccoli, and beans.

For each vegetable the classes will include information on:
  • Choosing appropriate vegetable varieties for growing in Fife.
  • Methods of seed sowing and planting out
  • Methods of thinning and growing on
  • Crop rotation
  • Pests and diseases
  • Storage of vegetables, to keep you enjoying them in the winter

The course will also include a visit a local organic market garden in St. Monans.

Classes will take place on Thursday evenings from 7pm-9pm for a block of 6 weeks, starting on Thursday 18th April, until Thursday 30th May (Break from classes on 9th May). The cost for all 6 sessions will  be £78.
